I saw a guy shoot a Smith .500 a while back. It had a 7 or 8 inch compensated barrel and kicked like a mule. It makes my .44 mag look impotent. They make it in a 3 1/2 or 4 in. barrel that they call the Alaskan Fisherman.
I get the concept but I might as well take my mauling from a big ole grizzly as to have to shoot that thing.

CJ7, I have two 5-screw Smiths, vintage mid 50's, one is a 4" MODEL 29 in 44 Mag, the other a 6 1/2 inch Model 27 in 357.

I have a couple of 41 mags, one is a 8 3/8 model 57, the other a 4 inch model 58. You remember that was the fixed sight 41 mag that Smith tried to get the Police to adopt. There weren't many takers, especially after they fired them. Definatelly a hand full.

If I didn't handload, the 41's would be just about obsolete.

If you are old enough to remember, Elmer Keith had Remington duplicate, in a factory offerring, his pet "22.5 grns of 2400 behind a 240 grn semi wadcutter" 44 mag load.. That was a blast in a 4 inch barrel model 29.

I wish this was not a SHMB, I could tell you what my "other Hobby" is. I can say that I shoot about 6000 rounds a year.

150+ ft.lbs of recoil energy at 28fps velocity in a 12 lb rifle. That's like someone hurling a sledge hammer at you with all their might and you trying to catch it.

Compare that to the 30-06
180 g. bullet produces 20.3 ft. lbs of recoil energy at 12.8 fps velocity

a .338 Win mag is roughly 35 ft. lbs and 16 fps.

That guy didn't have a clue what he was trying to shoot. Even with a better stance and grip no one could hold on to that.

Boardman, that 500 Smith is one of those things that makes you say, "what in the hell were they thinking". You are right, shooting one makes you yearn to pick up something with a light recoil, like a 44 mag
