As usual, all of you who spend your entire waking hours for fresh meat to post in this hallowed forum are way off base. Doesn't being wrong all the time ever get tired for any of you? Obviously not.

The goal of the North at the beginning of the Civil War was to preserve the Union. Admittedly a rather abstract concept. Lincoln himself said "If I could preserve the Union by freeing all the slaves I would do it tomorrow. If I could preserve the Union by freeing none of the slaves I would also do that tomorrow." He only issued the Emancipation Proclamation after realizing the Union needed a stronger rally cry and he finally got his first battle victory at Antietam. Also notice said proclamation did not free the slaves in states that were still loyal to the union.

Lincoln was, in my opinion, the greatest president we have ever had. He was also a flawed human being and a product of his times. All white people back then truly believed black people were beneath them. Lincoln himself was shocked and amazed at how intelligent and articulate Fredick Douglas was. You no life Trump tards need to go find a dictionary and look up the meaning of those words.

The reason the South fought was more to preserve their way of life, which yes, slavery was a part of. But it did not have to come to that.

I will go to my grave believing the Civil War could have been avoided with effective leadership in the 15 to 20 years before Lincoln was elected. But we did not have it. Just like we don't have it right now with Trump. See how dangerous ineffective leadership can be.

Slavery would have died a natural death on it's own in the coming decades because the upcoming technological advancements would have rendered slavery economically unsustainable. So yes, I do think the Civil War was totally unnecessary.

It's too bad we did not have effective leadership in the years leading up to the Civil War or in the years after it ended.

There's the book you should read Gremlin Driver. A historical lesson in the dangers of Trump and his failed leadership. A president that intentionally attempts to divide the country is a very dangerous thing.

But of course you will never admit that. Originally Posted by Jam3768

If slavery would have died due to technological innovations - why does it still exist today?

800,000 white men died to free the blacks from slavery.

Blacks do not have clean hands here because they sold their fellow blacks into slavery.

Black people born today are no more responsible for being slave traders than I am for slavery.

DPST History revisionism.
Orwell's 1984 is a reality if Biden wins.

Now this is a very interesting thread if you remove the vitriol and name calling but it would seem that is impossible. Some very good opinions as to "why" the civil war started. Lincoln's opinions and actions. All very interesting but let me get back to the OP's opinion.

Should Trump take this stand, that bases should not be re-named? From a purely political view, the majority says no, not because they want to give into the mob, I certainly don't and yes, sometimes Conservatives get tired of "giving in" but you have to pick your fights with politics in mind whether you like it or not, at least that is my opinion.

This is not a stand Trump should make. I'm not even going to bother with polling, I think I know it already and with the Republican leader of the Senate and many other Republicans taking the stand that this isn't a fight Trump should pick, holly crap, you don't need to be a political science major to see that this fight is not worth it when there are Soooooo many other things to take a stand on like law and order.

I happen to think that statues of Confederate Generals belong in museums but they should be taken down only if the elected officials with the authority to do so, no matter their reason to do so, vote yes. End of discussion but under no circumstances should a city council, city police, Mayor, Governor, allow a mob to tear down a statue while they stand there and watch because they are afraid they might hurt somebody "breaking the law" and the political ramifications of doing so. There is no other decision to make other than stop law breakers by any means necessary. Persuasion comes first then action if necessary.

We can argue all day whether cops should get rough with peaceful protesters like the guy I saw berating a cop, right in his face, with no mask on by the way and I'm asking myself "why don't you push this fool out of your face"? You don't have to hit him with the night stick but damn, shove his ass back and tell him to maintain some distance or he will be arrested. While you may have the right to yell at a cop, you don't have the right IMHO, to do it nose to nose especially during this pandemic.

I know, it pisses me off too to give in to any demands made by BLM but when a clear majority of Americans believe something and I think a clear majority see no reason to fight this battle on bases or statues, then you pick another battle to fight when the numbers are more on your side like law and order which clearly the majority of American do agree with though you couldn't tell it by watching the nightly news.

One thing must be made clear though, there is a big difference between some of the people Black and White protesting under a BLM banner and the leaders of BLM who are on tape, on the record as having Marxist ideology. OEB and I and others and this gentleman are trying to tell people that if you are donating to BLM like Nike, Ford and all the Tech companies, you are donating to a group that believes in Marxism and will try to change this country to Marxism. Now maybe the average dumb ass people we see on the news don't know and understand this meaning but holy crap, Pelosi, Shumer and the other Democrats don't understand what giving in to Marxist ideology can lead to? Maybe they do but winning this election is all they are thinking about now and to call out BLM for what they are will only cause a riff in the party. Maybe they think that after they have power back, they will be able to control these Marxist. Have they no understanding of History? Oh, that guy Adolf, nobody is going to buy that, he'll fizzle out if we just ignore him". How well did that work out? We ignore Marxist, fail to call them what they are not merely the leaders of BLM but the Marxist leaders of BLM. This is a distinction that must be made and giving Marxist hundreds of millions of dollars for their cause, could be our downfall.
