"Gates request because the F35 JNS is a much better fighter. At least know whats "

Actually its the F35 JSF "Joint Strike Fighter" Sorry for the typos.

US spends 19% of its annual budget on Defense.
Soviets Spend 18% of its annual budget on defense
China Spends 18% of its annual budget on defense
UK spends 19% of its annual budget on defense.

As the policeman for the world, the US has a need for a larger military budget.

god I tried really hard to read every ones post but I think we should stop making all thease fake weapons that take years to make real then by the time their here we don't need them for the battles we are in. Use what we have drop more really big bombs get in get out if they try us again drop bigger bombs.

Presently, we have the most powerful military in the world. I think this is a stabilizing influence on the rest of the world....for example, Europe hasn't degenerated into WW3, since our ascendency to superpower status. We have had a very long standing military philosophy that we do not want to fight our wars within the borders of the US...instead, we project power, and fight our battles elsewhere. Its expensive. We still have island territories left over from WW2, we still have a large presence in Korea and Germany...but to retract and let Russia and China attain parity would risk fighting a future battle on our soil. If they put that to use, and we don't have anything to counter that, the balance of power would shift in South East Asia in China's favor... and it wouldn't end there.

We can't afford to make the same mistake Great Britain made at the beginning of the 20th Century... gut military spending in favor of social spending back home. This weekend the United Kingdom (Then the number 1 power) and helped foster two major world wars. Without the US's existence, the UK would've given up the crown of supremacy to the Germans, and later the Soviets, and things would've been different today.

Neglect of developing the military, adequately, also bit us in the butt back in World War II. Shortcuts taken in torpedo development in the 1930s lead to many of our torpedoes bouncing off the hulls of Japanese warships; without doing damage. We could've stopped their advance sooner.

To emphasize another point made in the quote... fighting a war on foreign territory beats having to fight it on our own soil. The later puts us in a position where we have two choices... hold territory or lose it. That's not something we want to find ourselves in.
