When primitive cars first began sharing the roads which were primarily used by horses and buggies, there was a law requiring that a man with a lamp travel on foot 50 feet head at night to warn the horses and riders that a car was coming!
Apparently, horses would spook if a rattletrap internal combustion engine car suddenly came upon them without warning and could gallop off and throw the rider!
We have come a long since then, but that sight is hard to imagine today!
