Definition of a Courtesan and her Clientele...Agree?

Since I am new, maybe I don't have the requisite experience to answer intelligently. I think I came into this whit a very naive delusion about what this experience might be like.

Based on your definition in the initial post, Lily, I would say that is very close to what I was seeking and what I thought would happen. What I have found, in my very, very limited experience is something which bears no resemblance to what you describe.

What you describe, for comparison purposes, sounds very much like a visit to a five star restaurant, where the food is excellent, but the dining experience surpasses even the food.
What I have experienced thus far more closely resembles a drive thru at Jack-in-the-Box after the bar has closed at 2 am. Cars in front of me, cars behind me, so hurry up and get thru the line, pay your bill, and move on.
I suspect we are having two monologues with our own assumptions here, as opposed to an actual conversation with another person. Originally Posted by Thais

For those who are "allergic" to the term "elitist"...There in lies a great contradiction, for this very forum attracts only those you seem to be allergic to.........

Right now, I see elitism as a side-dish that could be pushed aside to focus on the content. When I stop seeing it this way, I will be out of here.

Glad to know you extend such courtly benevolence to potentially unelites...Where would I be without your potential sympathy. Originally Posted by Nineveh

The study by Liza Crihfield is also excellent. She was famed for being the only westerner to live as a geiko, however, they never let her go through the official ceremonies.

Western women can live as Geisha all they want, the Donna want Japanese women. They're white, and a pleasant novelty as entertainers, but they'll never be truly embraced into the shadow world. Originally Posted by Lauren Summerhill

Or another thread because I agree with Thais.
If you do some digging into thesis and the like where people have actually done substantial research into courtesans, you will find that a courtesan is a woman who wishes to maintain a lifestyle to which she has become accustomed, not create such a lifestyle. That is why so many self-proclaimed courtesans are dismissed, regardless of how successful they may be at securing the trappings of wealth. You would be maintaining a the kind of privileged life you were born into. Women who traditionally became courtesans were those with brothers who would inherit the wealth upon the parents death and who did not wish to marry to secure their wealth.

When we divorced, after 9 years of marriage and two children I let him keep 90% of the estate even though I was entitle to half because I didn't want his money, I had my own. I was never as wealthy as my father, at my peek I was only worth a couple of million - pennies compared to the empire I came from. But, I have also hit rock bottom and at one point was next to homeless living on food stamps. And guess what, my only brother inherited the bulk of my father's estate. Yet all this does not and would not entitle me to be called a Courtesan, it is a title I would have to earn IMO.
