CNN Doc says "the science has changed"!

Tiny, the point being that the CDC did not change their recommendation but the Democrats are now ignoring the science if by science they mean what the CDC and Fauci believes.

If following the CDC guidelines were so damn important to the Democrats, what other reason could there be to abandon their advice NOW? The CDC and Fauci HAVE NOT SAID IT'S TIME TO RETURN TO NORMAL but the polls have.

Tiny, I believe history will show that very little "common sense" has been shown from the beginning. Irrational fear is what has driven this not common sense in my opinion. Originally Posted by HedonistForever

I was on the email list of a person who I respect highly who works for a free market think tank in California. Republican Senators and the like listen to this guy. He's extremely smart and highly respected.

In March, 2020, he sent out a message, trying to start a grass roots effort for people to start wearing masks. He included a long list of links to studies that showed masks work, and even included instructions for making masks from things around your house. At that time, N95's and KN95's weren't available because they were all being used by health care workers.

And what was his purpose in doing this? He correctly sensed that government was going to implement lockdowns, put many people out of work, and jack up government spending to ridiculous levels to support individuals and businesses. And at some point all this would result in large increases in the taxes we pay.

He didn't want to see any of that happen. He opposed lockdowns. But he knew how the political system works and saw the writing on the wall. And he figured masks might just enable people to keep working and thus avoid the hardships we'd have to endure from stay at home orders and temporarily shutting down businesses.

At the time, the CDC was recommending that the pubic not wear masks. The real reason might have been that they wanted to save them for health care workers. But I believe they were also making some of the same arguments the anti-maskers have made here.

After receiving the email, I drug a couple of the surgical grade N95 masks I'd had stashed since 2005 out and started wearing them when appropriate, even though the CDC recommended against it. I sent others to friends and family.

I posted about all this here on eccie. I got a good reception. I remember HotRod, who was a big Trump supporter, recommended a couple of places where you could get industrial grade masks, used by body shops and the like.

Now this has all gotten ridiculously political, and it never should have. If you're a Republican you're supposed to be anti-vax and anti-mask. If you're a Democrat you're supposed to be pro-lockdown and ignore that many unvaccinated people have immunity from previous infections. And that makes no sense. None.

The CDC is always going to err on the side of caution. They're in the business of saving lives and promoting good health. They're not going to weight economic considerations as heavily. And they're definitely fallible. They fucked up on testing at the start of COVID. And there was the aforementioned bad advice about masks at the start of COVID. I don't think the Democrats who are lightening up on their promotion of COVID mandates and the like are doing it solely for political expediency. Yes, that may play a part. But mainly they're exercising good judgement. They see that most people have some immunity, and vaccine mandates just don't make sense any more, despite what the CDC says.

Death Count -

You will give a factor of 5? LOL You have a link to back up your theory. The CDC, John Hopkins, USA Facts, everyone has a death count of 900,000 for the USA EXCEPT you. The CDC has a CoVid death count of 912,000. This is there number not my number!

HERD Immunity -

You are wrong about what you said regarding HERD Immunity. HERD Immunity varies by virus. For measles virus its 95%. For polio virus it's 80% of population would have to get it and survive to protect the rest of the herd.

Herd Immunity is more difficult to achieve for a virus that mutates. For Influenza_A virus it mutates once a year. A new vaccine is available every October. SARS_CoV-2 virus is mutating at a quicker pace right now. There have been about six mutations over 24 month period. IF SARS_CoV_2 will behave like Influenza_A remains to be seen.

How Eisenhower Predicted Fauci | Opinion

Opinion by Rafi Eis - Yesterday 6:00 AM

If it wasn't obvious before, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that science has become thoroughly politicized. Though normally focused on observable and verifiable causes and effects in the natural world, many scientists, especially government employed ones, have taken on a political role and have shaped scientific findings in the service of those political ends. The truth eventually came out, but at a massive cost to people's mental health, finances and trust. President Dwight Eisenhower foresaw this abuse by government scientists, and he shows us the way out.

Public health officials initially insisted on the wet-market origin story for the novel coronavirus, but the lab-leak theory has become just as plausible. Cloth masks once deemed essential are now labeled "facial decorations." Schools have opened without becoming super spreaders. A John Hopkins University study recently concluded that lockdowns had a minuscule impact on virus morbidity.

With all of these issues, some of the federal government's top scientists made a concerted effort to stifle debate. Dr. Francis Collins, the former head of the National Institutes of Health, requested a "devastating takedown" of those who disagreed with his insistence on lockdowns, referring to dissenting scholars from Harvard, Oxford and Stanford as "fringe." He and other public health officials selectively ignored real data. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) and chief medical adviser to the president, declared that "attacks on me, quite frankly, are attacks on science."

Collins' approach and Fauci's sentiment are exactly what President Eisenhower warned the American public about in his Farewell Address. He advised vigilance against the "danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite." These "task forces of scientists," Eisenhower cautioned, would lead to the "domination of the nation's scholars."

One reason that so few infectious disease scientists disagreed with Fauci is quite simple: the power of money. America offers around $5 billion per year to support infectious disease research, and almost all of it runs through the agency led by Collins and Fauci. Any infectious disease researcher would therefore be disinclined to run afoul of Dr. Fauci, as future grant funding or professional advancement may depend on the director's approval. Grants like those from NIAID give the project a stamp of legitimacy and open the door to other supporters. This system offers Fauci monopoly-like power over infectious disease research.

Research scientists then toe the line, or at least remain silent. This creates the appearance of unanimous agreement as, in Eisenhower's words, "a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity."

It is hard to prove intentional silence. But there are signs. When mask mandates were first introduced, for example, numerous virologists should have pointed to published RCT studies that cast doubt on masks' effectiveness in preventing transmission of airborne viruses. One May 2020 CDC paper "did not find evidence that surgical-type face masks are effective in reducing laboratory-confirmed influenza transmission, either when worn by infected persons (source control) or by persons in the general community to reduce their susceptibility."

Likewise, the World Health Organization's 2019 program for an influenza pandemic does not recommend facemask use for the non-symptomatic or uninfected, and only recommends business and school closures in the most severe circumstances, even while acknowledging that these measures lack good evidence of effectiveness. This too was missing from COVID policy discussions.

Ike correctly assessed that "the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop" is no longer the driving force behind scientific and technological progress. Research has become more "formalized, complex and costly." A 21st-century Benjamin Franklin can no longer purchase the expensive equipment or devote the time needed to make world-changing inventions or discoveries. Therefore, an "increasing share [of research] is conducted for, by or at the direction of the federal government."

But it is still possible to steer clear of the dangers of politicized bias in science by maintaining the core of scientific inquiry: "intellectual curiosity." Intellectual curiosity is what enables us to figure out the truth of the reality that confronts us.

A pivot towards government research grants need not remove "the solitary inventor" from the picture. Those inventors may not be able to conduct the research on their own, but they can surely analyze the data. Government funded scientific data should always be open for scrutiny, because transparency enables the curious to understand the truth for themselves. Time and again, public officials attempted to force consensus over COVID. Government funded research that encourages competition and debate, rather than uniformity of thought, can help us figure out the truth.

But Ike proposed a second, more important principle. To avoid the "domination of the nation's scholars" he declared that "it is the task of statesmanship to mold, to balance, and to integrate these and other forces, new and old, within the principles of our democratic system-ever aiming toward the supreme goals of our free society." Scientists can tell us their best understanding of reality and its consequences, like the dangers of a new virus. But multifaceted decisions that affect people in different ways, such as closing schools or businesses, are not questions of science but judgements about the best way to navigate reality. That is the role of politicians elected by the people.

While the scientist may be able to predict the consequences of some of our decisions, it is the statesman who must create policy that balances various needs, especially the tradeoff between freedom and safety. What should the quarantine policy be for COVID-exposed children in schools? Should hospital workers be obliged to get vaccinated? This requires a deliberative process, one best suited for legislative bodies.

Eisenhower issued two warnings in his Farewell Address: "the acquisition of unwarranted influence...by the military-industrial complex" and "that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite." The aimless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq demonstrated the danger of the former, while the coronavirus pandemic has forced us to witness the latter. Ike was prescient. We cannot return to a bygone era and dismantle these systems, but we can be more aware of the forces at play and be wiser. The current pushback against American engagement in Ukraine is more forceful than the leadup to the Iraq conflict because we saw the experts mislead us and fail. The next time a scientific scare comes rolling around, we must passionately seek truth and demand that our elected leaders courageously represent the people.

Obviously a lot of challenges and hurdles to clear to bring this utopian wet-dream to life. I assume fans, refs, stadium staff, etc., etc. must also wear them. Probably must also be at least vaxxed at 4X minimum. What about plexiglass face shields or googles??

But what about the Vegas lines? Will they include bets for:
  • Number of refs that pass out
  • Number of players that pass out
  • Number of spontaneous heart attacks by either
  • Number of fouls per game for mask slip violations
N95 Basketball

Subject: N95 Basketball League

Good afternoon,

We have been given clearance to offer a basketball league at the [Sun Devils Fitness Complex], the “N95 Basketball League”. Participants are required to wear an N95 Mask while playing. No other masks will be accepted. The SDFC does not have N95 Masks on-site for participants; they must be provided by players.

This league is going to be played on Friday afternoons at Downtown, Poly, Tempe, and West, beginning Friday, 2/18. There is very limited space available. If registration fills up quickly, we will look at options at expanding the league, but that is not guaranteed and is subject to facility availability.

Registration is currently available online at FitnessOnline.asu.edu. Teams must have 4 members registered online before being “confirmed” into the league.

All leagues are “Open”; there are no restrictions based on gender. There are competitive and recreational divisions available.

The leagues will be self-officiated. Staff will only be on-site to enforce mask policies. Games will be stopped if participants are not appropriately wearing their N95 Masks. Multiple infractions will result in cancellations of the leagues.

We will send out formalized rules in the next week or so to registered participants.

Once again, players must have and wear an N95 Mask while participating. These are widely available locally as well as online. Individuals who do not have an N95 mask will not be permitted to participate.

We understand this is not the ideal scenario. However, this is our opportunity to have basketball available and we are going to do whatever we can to keep everyone safe during play.
If you have any questions, please reach out to us at xxxxxxxx@gmail.com.

Best,

Danny, ASU Sports Programs Staff

Should be a bonanza for the corporate sponsors like Pfizer, Moderna and N95 mask suppliers. I guess there is a risk that a P100 league could steal some thunder and audience though. Oh well, business always has it's inherent risks...

Why_Yes_I_Do, I used to do interval training at the gym with my N95 mask on. I had to stop once in a while to step outside and get some air. But you know what, when I’d run outside later in the week, I’d have an extra kick. Wearing the N95 was like training at altitude. Some endurance athletes go to places at high altitudes to train before important events. Well I accomplished the same thing without the time and expense!

Since you have a renewed interest in actual SCIENCE ... John Hopkins has been reporting from its own studies for several years now that the government response has not been appropriate and/or necessary (and that's my wording not their "scientific conclusions) ... and more importantly documents have existed in the possession of our government since before 2014 and afterwards as to the development of the cells that ended up being called "Covid19"!

Before January 2020 I had the gainful opportunity to review enough of them to have been aware of the FACT #1 they didn't come from a monkey's ass and they were dangerous (which is why Obaminable shitcanned the taxpayer funding in 2014!), #2: Bitten & Faki-Fauci have been up to their eyeballs in making money PERSONALLY from the pharma business shifting to China.

I recall you are one on here who stated STATS posted as "REPORTED" were "Official" stats ... and now you are trying to appear valid and informed with reality? People who start shifting with the wind are as worthless as our government is now. NBC, CBS, CNN, et al are struggling to complete their transition to reality and establish their "credibility"! Too Late!

I wear a cloth mask when I go inside of businesses, particularly when I see their employees wearing them. In Montgomery County I see fewer masks being worn at businesses, except for national franchises for which I am assuming they are continuing to follow their protocol, although those mandates are rapidly fading as we approach the fall election.

That informs me that the Mask Bullshit was political and not The Science, and still is political. I am to meet in an hour for work related issues for which I have been asked for assistance. Two different "political" themes present, but we won't be wearing masks in the meeting. I politely asked in the previous meeting a couple of weeks ago. No need for masks. Nor did I WE wear masks in the social meeting I had yesterday with a friend who has NEVER WORN a mask in any of our social meetings even BEFORE the emptyheads started screaming wear a mask.
