NFL and Houston Texans Superthread: Are we ready for some football?

What was O’Brien’s rational for calling the fake punt from his 27 with a 17 point lead? Asking for a friend.

Number of points have come up on Houston talk shows this past week.

1. BoB is on his knees thanking his lucky stars that the Astros took all the heat off him;
2. The entire Texans organization is arrogant and feel they know better than anyone else.
3. No one is held accountable in the organization
4. There is no flow, no tempo to the offense, it is mainly hoping Watson gets the ball to Hopkins
5. BoB puts more faith in people who practice hard than who produce on the field. This is why they have the highest paid center in the league who is just so so and they let Clowney go for almost nothing. This is why you see players leave and do so well on other teams and wonder why the Texans did not keep them. BoB did or did not like the way they practiced.
6. In spite of all that bragging about winning the division every team in the division but the Texans have reached the championship game since BoB became head coach.

Regarding BoB not liking the way they practice. I see it a little differently. The Texans DO NOT do anything to develop their players. They don't coach them up. They just teach them the plays. The ones who run the plays most consistently are the ones who start and play.(So yeah, liking the way they practice is part of it)
Kareem Jackson is a prime example of that failure. Dunta Robinson is another. Or how about damn near every O lineman they've drafted. Coaching them up is more than just teaching them technique.

In particular the O-line has to have chemistry. That can be coached(or affected) by giving them some consistency. Coaching also includes setting the bar for professionalism and holding players accountable without it being a public trial. The Texans do a poor job of that. (There's that lack of accountability trickling down)
Look around the league at good players who have been coached up to be great. Patrick Mahomes is a prime example. He runs that Chiefs offense like he designed it. He adjusts and he knows how to adjust the protections. The receivers know how to read what he is doing pre snap. That's why they can come back from double digit deficits. No panick, just confidence. Watson runs his offense like he still doesn't quite understand it. He just makes plays on athleticism.

The Texans antagonize good players ie Robinson, Dewayne Brown, Clowney and give them a reason to be unhappy here. Eventually they lash out about something because they don't feel like they are being heard within the organization. That's a lack of professionalism. If the Texans are to expect the players to behave professionally they need to set the example from the top.

Non of this will get any better with BoB serving as de facto GM.
The Pats are a great example of coaching players up. They will take good players with the right attitude and make them better. Then they turn them into a TEAM. They'll even take a chance on a great player every now and then and run their ass out as quick as they brought them in if they don't conform and take to the coaching. That sets an example and it reinforces a winning attitude. No player there is indispensable except for Brady and they all know it.

Until the Texans start thinking and acting like winners from the top down they'll always be what they are right now.
Let me sum it up for you boardman.

McNuttless Jr is the problem!!!!

When you would rather have Jerry Jones as your owner you know you are screwed!!! LOL.

Boardman, that was another thing brought up. The Texans do not develop their players
I would rather have the New England Offensive line coach than the GM guy(Nick Caserio) the Texans had the boner for and almost tampered with.

But a GM is needed to save BO'B from screwing the pooch even more!!
Watched the first 2 episodes of the Aaron Hernandez documentary. Nick Caserio was the GM when the Pats drafted Gronk and Aaron Hernadez in the same draft. Jeez I think they had Randy Moss also with Brady.

I would love Caserio to come into the Texans and draft well for them.

With our luck they'll end up getting some player personnel guy from the Browns or Dolphins.

McNair admits they've been operating with BoB as the defacto GM for the last 10 months.
That makes him responsible for giving up way too much for Tunsil, not getting nearly enough for Clowney along with woefully inadequate development of young players going back several years as they've managed to make the playoffs by being the least worst team in a dismal AFC South that desperately needs a team to establish some dominance.
Intent on saving money apparently they give the DC position to D Line coach Anthony Weaver who has 6 years of NFL coaching experience. I don't think he's the next Mike Vrabel but then again if he is he won't be here long.

Despite that McNair thinks BoB is doing a wonderful job as a GM and I guess he loves his play calling too. What an idiot!

Texans have serious issues with the main one being no draft picks. If the Texans had taken their lumps this year they could draft another good O lineman in first round and address a need in second and do the same next year. Now they have no picks, the Chiefs and Ravens are way better than they are. The Jags have four picks before the Texans have one. Plus they have to pay Tunsil as his deal is up and same with Watson so there goes all the cap space. In two years team will really be hurting due to lack of picks. BoB is killing the Texans and the owner is totally clueless.

They're patting each other on the back over how well they think they're doing.
