It is not cool or macho as some may feel to put the next person down, we all have our faults.

Though I confess to only scanning the thread, I remember the first time we had this discussion. It was back before aspd.net on the old UUSEgroup alt.sex.prostitution board, probably before the alt.sex.prostitution.discussio n board was split off from the a.s.p. board. In other words, centuries ago in internet time.

The answer is multifaceted and still somewhat obscure. Part of it is it's must a lot easier to be uncivil to someone when they are not in your physical presence. Part of it is that the anonymity of non real name discussion groups brings out the worst in some people, though one can look at Facebook to see that that factor alone isn't sufficient to explain it. Part of it is that there has been a general coarsening of society's standards of behavior over the past 35 - 40 years, that I would contend has accelerated in the past 20 years or so. Part of it MAY be that this hobby/occupation attracts a disproportionate percentage of confrontational people or people who's people skills are not the best. I have observed on a number of occasions that I am shocked at the degree of misogyny that I see on an almost daily basis on this and previous boards. And this summary is just the short version. Also, as the number of participants increases, the level of incivility tends to increase.

But you can rest assured that this isn't the first "silly whore board" to have this dynamic nor will it be the last. It is endemic to and a symptom of our time, of the internet, and our hobby.

Sic transit gloria mundi!
Does anyone else find it amusing that, in a thread asking why every thread turns into a pissing match, we get a pissing match going?
