I agree with the camp that says a short barrel shotgun is probably the best solution for home defense if you are not well practiced with a handgun. That being said where do you keep your shotgun? I had mine in the bedroom closet. I timed myself one day and couldn't get to it quick enough for my liking, so I've switched my primary to a 9m FN. I've looked a couple of times and I've also not been able to find a good locking mount for a shotgun, so I could hang it close to the door - but keep it secure.
Also, what do you all do to make the exterior of your home less attractive to bad guys? My first line of defense is to make all the rest of the houses around me look like better targets than mine. Lots of fixed and motion sensing lights, ADT signs etc.
