I was on here for years and the ONLY way to play is to torment them for the sheer fun of it, but refrain from sinking to their level (at least that is how I played it - never calling names if I could help it). Don't even bother to try to educate them, it can't be done. I did it for the practice of sparring with morons and rabid dogs and honing my arguments in text, nothing more, nothing less (well supporting my fellow sane moderates and progressives is one minor reward). There is also the challenge of occasionally breaking through to the ones that still have a shred of rationality left.

I think he should be forgiven and pending appropriate counseling, therapy, apologies, rest, training and community service should be given a shot on rejoining the force.
