I think the internet overall has decreased and somewhat hurt human relationships. I mean my ex and I were together for 3 years and might have had an actual phone conversation once a week. It was mostly all text flirting and emails. I miss the days when you stayed up til 7 in the morning talking to a guy....those were the days. Originally Posted by London Rayne

Its a good distraction and offers social interaction as well. Otherwise i would feel lonely learning all day :-(
There has been way too much cyber bullying in the news lately and it's only going to get worse. I don't know how you control that because of lot of the cases that have resulted in deaths have involved young people that are too old to cybernanny on the net. They say that technology helps us to communicate more easily but I'm not sure I agree, I think it just helps us to communicate faster..and faster is not always a good thing....that's why we have speed limits. As someone said in another thread, this is a society of instant gratification and sometimes the price of that is just too high. Just MO...

Even in universities you have the underlying problem of sponsors (Brigham Young is a mormon university for example) and which kind of researches are condoned or supported. So - the problem lies deeper and i`d stop short of blaming the internet itself as a method that triggers such behaviour. Its within people. Its within ethics. In a world where we have cyberspace the bullying is just different that is all in my POV

What I see is that you now , with the net, have a huge audience that you are talking to instead of say five friends in the same local. So naturally you are more likely to find an opposing view point and thus someone that is easily offended by what you have said. This can lead to some back and forth that maybe unpleasant but it is better than just talking amongist five friends that have the same world view. It is how one learns.

I find it exciting that I can watch someone in Egypt express their viewpoint towards someone in the States. It has broadened our knowledge base to the point where it is inevatible that there will be more and more heated disagreements. I think this a good thing. We will never do away with disrespectful behaviour....mainly because we will never all agree to just what constitutes disrespectful behaviour.

That is a very good thing in my book. How boring would the world be if we all agreed.

Now I know you all agree with that right?

At the touch of a button I can access a library of information that I otherwise wouldn't have access too....newspapers, journals etc. The net has allowed busines to expand..on a global scale and I'm not just talking about escorts lol. However, the newspaper would read the same if I held it in my hands after buying it in print...a conversation on the net doesn't transcend those barriers without adjustment because tone doesn't transcend through silence.
Don't get me wrong, the net is brilliant for many things, but I'm not sold on it (or texting etc) being the new way to communicate in this ever evolving World...

As an aside, I never email my friends/family in England. I pick up the phone and call.
It's much more expensive, but for me it's worth the extra that I get from that communication vs net.
Even then, it can be limiting. There are times when I have had to say, "Oh that's a conversation for in person." Not because I'm procrastinating...but usually because it's a sensitive issue and requires more in person communication than anything verbal can stretch to/accomodate. I am much more willing to be open in person than I am on the phone/net even with those I know well. Being able to see how someone reacts to me in a very short space of time is incredibly important to me.....which is why I don't do a lot of email back and forth with clients either...

Making statements that children some how need to be "mentally strong" against such attacks (bullying) is making assumptions about children in general. No two children are alike; where one child may have had the support, upbringing, education, and maturity level to deal with bullying, another may not have. Some children are more emotionally sensitive and not capable of verbalizing what is happening to them. In other words not all children having the same coping skills.

[mod hat on] Nice thread [/mod hat off], especially in light of my post on the welcome thread. Thanks all, it's nice to read. Okay, we ALL have to go get a room. In this case a really big room.

All it is is another form of communications, people no longer use telegraph but like you said they still do talk. All I am saying is that it is not as awful to the next generation as it is to us. They have friends all over the world now, information is moved from one kids thoughts to his friends inbox in a matter of seconds. Ours too. With that larger mixture of cultures, you get different version of just what is proper.
All I am saying is that the paradigm shift has made our civility discussion a moot point with the younger generation. They see nothing wrong with what they are doing. And frankly neither do I. They have just chosen a different path, same as we did from our elders.

I actually miss "talking." Long, meaningful conversations where you actually had tears in your eyes because of the spoken words. Even if you knew you were seeing that person at school that day, you still could not bear to get off the phone so you just fell asleep listening to each other breath. I miss that.
