I never said "rags to riches" stories were impossible, so your anecdotal is a pisspoor counter argument. Search around for "social mobility" for data driven pictures on reality. The US is much closer to China than to, say, Canada to the north in having an intrenched economic class hierarchy. The game is rigged and the sickening, perverse part is that it large portions of the apparatus are sold as being about individual merit and personal responsibility.
In the South here (although TX isn't exactly South, it is Texas) it is second nature via the past, although certainly it isn't the only place where it is/was. Crackers were turned against blacks to keep both in line. Used to be if you were white and poor you could take solace in "at least I'm not colored". That race aspect is slowly falling away but this is still a country that pisses on you if you have the misfortune of being born poor.
