I expect UT-Austin to ask the state to be exempt from the law in most locations on campus.
My opinion is similar to my opinion on guns elsewhere. Colleges should be given the OPTION of allowing or not allowing guns on campus. Hopefully they would make a decision that is in the best interests of all concerned parties.

The "option" would have to be by the board regulating the school and by policy approved by the school's board. Having a "policy" asserted by each professor is not workable. If the prof doesn't like it, move on. If the student doesn't like it, move on.
Before there were "universal" smoking bans I had a discussion with a college President about differences in enrollments in a nearby competitive college, which had increased their enrollment by about 30% over the previous year...... they allowed smoking .. he didn't. Same applies. There will be shifts, and out of state students may find firearms on campus offensive, whereas Texas residents maybe not so much.
