Guns don't kill people ... Colleges in Oregon do

JD Barleycorn's Avatar
In another thread, JD mentioned Switzerland as an example of a country with very high concentration of guns and low homicide rates. Very true. However, Switzerland has MUCH tougher gun laws than the U.S. A person must have a permit to purchase a weapon. A written contract must be executed between the seller and buyer of each weapon. Purchasing ammunition must follow the same procedures. To carry a loaded firearm in public a person must have a gun carrying permit, which is usually only issued to those working in the security industry.

How would you like such rules in the U.S.? Originally Posted by SpeedRacerXXX

Why do the libs insist on wasting time with things that won't work and will never be passed? Do they know people are dying while they try to make political points?

What does a person have to do in order to acquire such a permit?

Go to Academy, try to buy a gun and fill out the paperwork and present your id. Try not to lie on the form. Then wait 30 minutes or so to get approval. Try to buy ammo at the Academy counter and if they don't think you are the minimum age, they won't sell it to you. After you buy the gun, they'll encourage you to fill out the gun warranty card from the manufacturer and mail it in. You'll get a NRA membership out of it. Then they will walk you to the door and hand you the gun.

My guess is that the majority of guns are bought in this manner in TX.

The whole anybody can legally buy any gun at any time meme is a Dim ruse. Originally Posted by gnadfly

So I applied for a weapons permit in order to buy a Glock 19.

It works like this:

You go to the local post office and ask for a copy of your criminal records. You pay 20 Swiss Francs and they send you a paper during the next couple of days.

After this you go to the local police station and ask for a weapons permit. They give you a bunch of papers and you have to fill them out.

They ask stuff inside the form like "Do you have any mental illnesses, is there any criminal process open against you, do you have any addiction etc.". After you answer these questions, they might check it out to see if it's true.

You can apply for 3 weapons and you have to explain why you want a gun, they have several categories like "Sports; Combat Shooting; Collection: Self Defense" etc. I went for "Sports" since I just want to shoot stuff for fun.

You can buy Bolt Action Rifles, Hunting Rifles, Hunting Shotguns with only a copy of your criminal record and ID, basically almost over the counter. But for any other weapon you need a Weapons Permit.

After filling those papers you have to go back to the police station and give them the papers, the copy of your criminal record and a copy of your ID.

They take around 10 days to check out the information that you filled. If they accept you (they always will if you have a clean record and don't come from a country like Albania, Serbia, Croatia, Sri Lanka etc. (since the immigrants from these countries have high criminality and because of sending these weapons to their home countries when they were at war.)

You receive a confirmation that you have been accepted and you need to pay 50 Swiss Francs for them to send you the permit.

After paying you get the permit which consists of 3 copies of permit.

You go to a store, let the guy there fill your permit and buy the gun you want and all the ammo you want.

You cannot carry the gun with you unless you are going to a shooting range (always inside the briefcase), you cannot keep a loaded magazine inside the same briefcase.

Conceal carry is not allowed, unless you have a job that requires you to use guns or have guns with you, such as Bodyguards or some forms of Security jobs.

Guns are very expensive in Switzerland, a new Glock costs around 1k Dollars and the ammo goes for 17 Dollars for 50 rounds. A new SIG 550 rifle goes for 3k Dollars, unless you get one when you are in the army.

I expect UT-Austin to ask the state to be exempt from the law in most locations on campus.

My opinion is similar to my opinion on guns elsewhere. Colleges should be given the OPTION of allowing or not allowing guns on campus. Hopefully they would make a decision that is in the best interests of all concerned parties. Originally Posted by SpeedRacerXXX

Before there were "universal" smoking bans I had a discussion with a college President about differences in enrollments in a nearby competitive college, which had increased their enrollment by about 30% over the previous year...... they allowed smoking .. he didn't. Same applies. There will be shifts, and out of state students may find firearms on campus offensive, whereas Texas residents maybe not so much.

At least one tenured professor has announced he was leaving UT because of campus carry. Expect more.
How blind can people really be? We blame the guns, want gun control, and can't even realize that the guns are not the problem, but the people with the guns! I am a strong believer in the right to carry firearms, and having a gun should not be an excuse to stop someone from having a gun! People need to open their eyes, and look at the people with the gun, and not the gun people have! I am sick of this conversation because the truth is, this country is going to hell, and it isn't because of what guns are doing, or using excuses like the shootings at schools, (don't get me wrong, I feel for the victims) but the problem lies in the conditions of obtaining them. These are sick, mentally disabled people with a vendetta, and yeah I got a problem with Obama, but it isn't because of the guns, but the bullshit he has done!

I HAVE THE RIGHT TO BARE ARMS AND I'M PROUD OF IT!

There's nothing sexier than a chick with a rifle!

Unless your the one looking down the barrel!
