Social hierarchy is really a very complex and it's pervasive ranking system and it operates quietly in the background in the affairs of man.You are partially right--it does exist, and it is complex.

There are others besides the military. Religeous societies. Academia to some degree. Regulated professions. And from first hand knowledge, the military can be capricious at times as well.
