I was wondering the same thing (especially after my recent tutoring of and tutelage by Esme Rayne).

I appreciate your views, OTRDriver, and would also welcome others' opinions as to quality and whether it's a worthwhile investment of time.

While it will certainly not win any literary awards, I found the trilogy entertaining. They were all in the category of 'book snarf', very quick and easy reads. Not a tremendous amount of depth in characters or plot, yet a fun, boy meets girl, boy ties up girl, kinky kind of read.

I do know that I came away wishing to be just 10% of Christian Grey - 10% of his wealth, 10% of his sexual prowess, and 10% of his crazy. If I could get down to just 5 shades of fucked up, my life would be greatly improved.
I have the whole trilogy. Its way better than twilight!

For erotica, there are FAR better choices out there. I'd classify it as erotica for those who aren't familiar with the subject matter therein....

Honestly,

It is a book about a rich guy who manipulates a young girl who doesn't have a clue about sex.
Judy Bloom with a little sauce....but not enough sauce for me

Looking for a read that lives up to the hype...try some JR. WARD or LA BANKS

Spikebaby and Grace are correct.

I've read the trilogy and it was a romance novel set in modern times with a little bit of kink. VERY little.

Bad boy meets feisty virgin. Her love for him, and her saucy ways, turns him into a better man. There is mild intrigue. More intrigue. A robbery. A potential kidnapping.

And tada, the protagonist who has never done anything to anybody (except a few kisses here and there) is able to be wildly erotic, experienced and whatever else she does to appeal to a very worldly billionaire who has kept women in the past and also had females in slavery with severe boundaries.

Yes. Makes sense. Of course!

I can see why it's appealing to the mainstream. But for those of use who read a lot of literary porn, it's laughable.

If you want to read something that is interesting in terms of BDSM, etc., try "The Marketplace" series by Laura Antoniou. They're so good that it's hard to put them down and she has just had the series reprinted and so they're on the market now.

Some might suggest that it's poor writing but I like them and the books are hot, gritty and just raw.

Or try the Beauty trilogy by Ann Rice. If you like the first book, keep reading because it gets better, although the second book is my favorite. If you don't like the first book, quit reading, it gets worse.

Fun topic!

P.S. "Looking for a read that lives up to the hype...try some JR. WARD or LA BANKS" Guess that is what I'll be looking at this evening! Thanks for the tip, Spikebaby!!!

Does not sound as if the author broached the main subject ... taint.

I have not read the series, but my friend did. She said that it was kinda boring.

Heard they were doing a broadway musical based on the books. Would be an interesting date night. Guess they have to milk the popularity..
