Places to stay:
Downtown
Chesterfield
Central West End
Airport

Places to definitely stay away from:
Maryland Heights\
Creve Coeur

Places to eat are numerous depending on where you are staying
The Hill area for Italian food - It's the old Italian neighborhood back when there were ethnic neighborhoods.
Downtown, Caleco's is a good choice as well as Charlie Giotto's
BBQ:
Pappy's
Bogarts
Sugar Fire
Adam's Smokehouse
Salt + Smoke

Breakfast and Lunch:
Osage Grill

List of a lot of good restaurants

Things to do:
St. Louis Zoo (world class and it's free)
Art Museum (Free as well)
Science museum(also free) These three are all in Forest Park. If you come in the summer there is also the Muny Opera which is the largest outdoor theater in the US. Mostly musicals.
If you like to Gamble, there is Lumiere downtown and Casino Queen right across the river. Hollywood in Maryland Heights and Ameristar about 2 miles from there in St. Charles.

Missouri Boatanical Gardens (also known as Shaw's Garden)
City Museum for the kid in you
About 2 hours southwest of St. Louis are some really great float streams if you are into canoeing or tubing.

The arch and the museum at the base of the arch
Of course we have the Cardinals and the Blues
The Old and New Cathedrals
And some other ideas:

Strip clubs if you are so inclined
The main ones are
Penthouse and Country Rock Cabaret (used to be called PT's Sports) These are right across the river in Sauget IL
Hustler Club and Hollywood in Washington Park IL
There are no good strip clubs on the west side of the Mississippi.

If I missed anything, I'm sure someone else will add to the list.
Try Libertine in Clayton, Peacemaker in Soulard, Fraser's in Soulard, Mission Taco in CWE.

BTW- You free Sunday late AM?

(There are also several other Gitto's restaurants around STL, if I recall correctly. The downtown location is pretty much casual dining; the other ones (especially the one on the Hill itself, where I've been only once over a couple decades ago) are much more upscale. Or at least the one on the Hill was quite upscale when I went; my then fiancee (later ex-wife) and I were given a gift certificate for there as an engagement gift.)

If you're a baseball/sports fan Gitto's downtown is an especially good choice to see the pictures of all the ballplayers and sports figures who've patronized the place over the years (it's not far from Busch Stadium--both the old one, which was torn down, and the new one, which occupies part of the footprint of the old stadium).

Whenever I'm staying downtown I usually try to get dinner at Gitto's downtown at least once during my visit. Once I was in town on a Sunday when Gitto's was closed so I tried Caleco's. Good selection of beers; I opted to have the lasagna for dinner, and it was pretty good--and the serving size was huge...

My recommendation would be for Gitto's if it's open, but Caleco's isn't a bad contingency plan.

Cheers,

bcg
