hobby security

Given the recent news stories (and no, I'm not going to talk about it) it seems this should serve as a good reminder to everyone the need to keep hobby and real world information separate. Like really separate. Like brick wall between them.

The web searches have just gotten too thorough. If someone from the real world finds a hobby email (or the reverse) then these two worlds could collide with bad circumstances.

People also need to read Forum Guideline #5 and remember that everyone needs to respect each other’s anonymity. A few timely one-year banishments might cause some people to think twice before posting “hey, look what I found!” links for no good purpose other than for shits and grins.

Quite by accident, I figured out what's going on here after seeing a post in a national blog I'm a regular reader of.

To the above advice, I might add that, for women especially, the greater your hobby presence is, the more you should minimize your public presence. If you're going to be an escort, don't raise your profile in your community above the status of just another woman shopping at Walmart. You can be a Little League mom, but don't run for president.

I know one woman from a decade or so ago who used her real name in her email address for at least part of the time she was providing, and who moved on to what looks to be a successful career. But she's the exception.

The rule ought to be several other women whom I got to know over the years who to this day have virtually no Internet presence. On the Internet, under their real names, they are UTR.

Now is a good time to double check your hobby identity, have a different phone not connected to social media or your personal contacts, don't ever use your personal email or phone number for hobby related stuff, we've seen the last hooker extorting a guy for not wanting to pay a BS cancellation fee

Good advice.

The one and only time (I think) that I connected R/W info with the hobby was when I used a pre-paid credit card (gift card) to subscribe to Ashley Madison. I registered the card with R/W info, and when Ashley Madison got hacked, they got that info, and then I got all sorts of threats to out me if I did not pay up. I did not pay, and ignored the threats, and they finally stopped But, I learned my lesson.

...try "Googling" your various email addresses and phone numbers...

That's probably all the "Karens" did

I thought it was a rhetorical question. I don’t recall ever questioning your decision not to provide your personal information to p411. I just explained why I thought they were asking for it. They may be making a rational business decision to rescreen some or all providers. You are making a rational personal decision not to provide that information. Both things can be true.
