Why are the car makers pushing this ?

So you can sit in the drivers seat and not use your hands. What are you going to do then.....read a book......eat more food ? Most people prefer to drive their vehicles.

A truly "self driving car" will have to be told where to take you. That information will become an electronic foot print some where. Big Brother is already trying to track everyone ....... why make it easier??

The tech exists for self driving vehicles and for transport I think it will be a quick revolution once we have some infrastructure to ship goods via dedicated AI pathways. For personal transport some areas are more feasible for the concept but I would prefer more driver assist features to improve safety and keep traffic flowing. It may be another 25 years or more but at some point AI will be better drivers than we are

Who will pay the judgements and cover the liabilities when the cars crash ?

The drive no longer has responsibility. It seems like all the burden will be the car manufacturers.
Which is a tremendous liability to take on, on their part.
If they have deep pockets, attorneys will be rabid and come out of the woodwork.

Someone or some company will be sued.

Sounds like you are saying there will be car crashes in the future, and no one will have to pay for the damages.
