Orion is designed to be a deep space exploration spacecraft, much like Apollo only much beefier and versatile . It's mission is the moon and beyond.

I agree this is great. But I think we should adjust our thinking; Mars is not deep space, it is right next door.
As a old Hot Rodder, I am always awed by the staggering amount of Horse Power that 9 million pounds of thrust produces in moving an object that heavy, that fast, that quickly, to orbit velocity.

I saw a Saturn V launch, and even from 3 miles away, it takes your breath.

But, I still think manned space flight is a waste of our limited resources.
