While there is a "claim" that it comes from southern jazz and minstrel shows, and eventually a vaguely similar chant was used at Southern U, but the Saints did not use it until your "glimmer of hope year" year in 1983.

The actual cheer was started by a group of season ticket holders in 1980 during Cincinnati's run at the Superbowl inspired by a local brewery:

The Southern U and high school cheer was not the same words as you currently use. The Bengals version is the original NFL football cheer, even the loathsome Steelers know that and lampooned our beloved cheer of : "Who Dey, Who Dey think goin' to beat dem. . ."

There is some indication that the Saints actually got the idea from Zydeco Rocker, Bootsie Collins, when he was working the jazz scene down there--he is from Cincinnati, though!

Perhaps next year the Bengals will go further and the Saints will be good as well and we can settle this in the next Superbowl.

Anyway, you can borrow our chant for now and cheer on. Good luck next weekend!

PS: Is Kevin Kaesviharn still on your team these days? He was a pretty good player with a great attitude.
I've been watching this team lose since I was a little kid. Now finally, it is our time and this article does capture the true spirit of all Saints fans!
Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) used "Who Dat?" in his 1884 "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".
