But was wondering what some of the locals might suggest an out of towner check out while visiting Tucson area?

For starters, there is the Arizona Desert Museum, Colossal Cave, I can think of more....BioSphere. U of A has a few things and Opera. I have "nice" areas for you to visit as far a resturants and more upscale accomodations. I am new to this site but not new to this town. You may PM me if you would like more places to see!
