Why the fuck was Trump talking to Bob Woodward in the first place - especially for 18 hours. Did Trump really think anything good was going to come from it?

There is another thread from months ago that I cannot find. It discusses that Trump doesn't really want to win, which is why he does and says so many stupid, reckless things. Add this new episode to the huge list of unforced errors committed by Trump.

If he loses in 2020, it will be almost entirely attributable to his own diarrhea of the mouth and his Twitter addiction.

There have been times-- both in the last election cycle and this one... where I've wondered if his primary mission is just to see how far he can push it before he finally loses support.

I would have agreed with you 100%. Trump's arrogance and narcissism know no bounds, thus he incorrectly thinks he can control his mouth around Bob Woodward and help his campaign. However after reading part of Cohen's book, this is out of his 2015/2016 playbook. Trump didn't have big campaign contributions and he wasn't willing to sell some assets and self fund through the primaries and general election. So what he did was get lots of free air time from CNN, Fox, MSNBC, the networks and newspapers, etc. Some of his more sensational comments, which you and I believe were self-defeating, may not have been diarrhea of the mouth. You confuse using the word "Violently" with violence.. and its an understandable disconnect.



Even Bannon, in an interview for a multi-part series on American Politics-- specifically stated that a lot of the things being said are intentional, because it activates his base. Violently polarizing means he is intentionally going after the most radical of the base-- knowing that it will trigger the most radical on the opposite side of his base-- which will frighten the moderates into begrudgingly voting for him, despite not much caring for his rhetoric.
