Actually, I'm wondering if the bankruptcy proceedings did not cut off all liability for actions taken before the bankruptcy proceeding. That is typically one fo the things that is done. Otherwise, what is the point of a bankruptcy if you can lose all of the assets after the bankruptcy anyway.

The court might have set aside a liability $$ fund for just such an eventuality, but what if it is not enough?

$0.57 for the part, how much for the installation in a recall?? it isn't so easy to pop an ignition switch out of the steering column, it being made to resist theft and all...They would have only had 0.57 more per car if they upgraded the part and assembled it at the factory that way. It might have cost them a hundred per car to recall it and replace it at the dealership. That might have been their thinking, cross their fingers and avoid the recall at the dealerships, the cheap ass bastards.

And the bailout only kept the company afloat. It did not require them to leave the faulty switch in place.

Reread the article. They aren't talking about the cost of a recall.

The price difference was the additionally cost to use a DIFFERENT switch in NEW cars as they rolled out of the assembly plant. So the labor cost is a wash. Instead of installing a $2 switch, they would install a $2.57 switch from Delphi.

So, the labor costs would be the same. But the parts cost of the new car would be $0.57 higher.

Some stupid posts here today. Bush bailed out GM in the latter half of December 2008. He would be leaving office in less than a month. His justice department for all intents and purposes never had any oversight of GM during this time. Obama does not have the same excuse. His DOJ oversaw a major recipient of government money and a union that was a major recipient of government money. Can you say "conflict of interest". That is what this is all about. That was never the case under Bush.
