WTF Happened to College Football?

I know I missed something in all the conference swapping a while back. I must have. Because almost all that's on broadcast NCAA is some perennial powerhouse drubbing Old Central Moose Scrotum State by 42 points in the second quarter. There might be one or two games played by two real institutions, or maybe two Middle BumFuck U's bumbling their way along in an empty stadium somewhere, but usually it's all about a beatdown.

What happened? Did all the little schools throw their pride out the window for broadcast dollars, thinking maybe if OU or Baylor or somebody beat them by 70 points the cash would ease their pain? WTF do these little schools tell their recruits? "Look, we'll get hammered for 12 weeks by guys twice our size and twice as fast, but you get to wear these new helmets with really cool paint jobs! Go Old Central Moose Scotum!"

This is pathetic. I remember when real schools played real schools and there were rivalries, big games, not Miami at Central Illinois Seminary for the Blind. Bajeebus.

Look at these scores...

What the hell are some of those schools doing in pads in the same town as their opponent? Dayum....as a friend of my once said "this shit be all fucked up an shit".

When fucking Michigan vs Minnesota is the only real contest on Saturday afternoon, and Northwestern knocks off Penn State, sheeeit, that ain't football.
It's called "September" . . been going on for years.

When the Irish played Alabama for the championship, when Alabama had a good play or scored, they were not yelling "Roll Tide", they were chanting SEC, SEC, SEC.
This has been going on for a long time. The University of Houston beat Tulsa in 1968 100-6.
I believe "moolah" for the "Our Lady of Great Agony" schools has a bit to do with it.
Lol.....how strange. It wasn't that long ago that top echelon schools scheduled home games with the Baylor Bears (and K-State, for that matter) in September as a "tune up" slaughter for their fans / students. Now that Art Briles has brought a new way of doing things in Waco, that has certainly changed, hasn't it?

Betcha dollars-to-donuts if you asked Urban Meyer (Ohio State) or Nick Saban (Bama) today if they'd consider a non-conference home-and-home with BU, neither would return that phone call.

Follow the money. One of my college suitemates is an AD at an SEC school now. I asked him why we played, SouthEast Northern Central Women's and Sissy-Boys School for Interior Decorators rather than have a home and home series with Big 10 or Big 12 schools or even PAC whatever schools. His response was simple. (paraphrasing) If we do a home and home with another big school, depending on stadium size (almost equal) we pay our own way and maybe a few thousand dollars changes hands one way or the other. If we play Rocco's school of typewriter maintenance, our alumni come to campus and donate an AVERAGE of $10 Million per weekend. So paying the Fighting Menstruations $800,000 is a net $9.2 Million gain.

It's called padding your record.
Also, some of the payday for the small school getting their asses kicked pays the entire annual budget. The D2 schools are guaranteed a payday in return for going up against the gladiators.
So it IS the money. I figured. I've understood tune-up games for a long time, and remember when Baylor and Oklahoma State were gimme games. It's just a shame to see these little schools get hammered. It's a good thing they instituted a college playoff system so sooner or later we'll get to see, as my father used to say, "some leather pop". Watching the slaughters is painful, watching the talking heads juggle the top twenty when they're playing nobody is worse. "Well, number 5 Oklahoma sent their cheerleaders to play Eastern Bumfuck and they won handily 72 to 6."

I mean, shit, you'd think if OU or Baylor had really played anybody they'd have known how fragile Bradford and RG3 were. The kids were brilliant touchdown machines in college, but rarely faced down the QB hounding wolves they were about to meet. So maybe the financial payoff is worth it for the schools involved, but the NFL needs to be aware of some of these paper lions with killer college stats and see if they really ever played anybody and how they fared on the rare occasions they did. Sometimes the last round kid from a little school that played giants might be the best choice. Like Joe Montana. Or a last rounder from a big school who played big schools. Like Tom Brady. Flashy college performances against nobody mean nothing, and that, along with the "will get hammered for dollars" is what's really bothersome. Oh well, money talks and whiners step to the rear of the short bus please!
Sisters of Perpetual Motion know they are gonna get hammered by Notre Dame but in addition to the money, it's also the exposure of the school via TV which is not a bad thing.

Gotta love when David wins tho. Appalachian state got paid their annual athletic budget to beat Michigan's ass in 2007...at Big House
Hey, the September "warm ups" are over and it's time for some real football (finally). Last night kicked it off with Arizona beating the Ducks 31-24 on the road.

Think Michigan fans are wanting a do over? They run Rich Rod out of Ann Arbor after three seasons and now he's got the Arizona Wildcats playing great (and undefeated!) ......while the Wolverines ponder "When do they fire Brady Hoke"?

Another game to tune in to tomorrow: Texas A&M at Mississippi State.......both undefeated. Should be entertaining.
