Unread topics?

Used to be when I logged in the topics and forums that had new posts would be highlighted to indicate this.
Nowadays when I log in though they aren't?
I have to look at the time of the last posts to see if any were new since my last visit.
This could lead to my missing out on some of the intelligent discussions going on around here...

Is this somehow a glitch on my control panel? And can I remedy it myself?

I don't think that has ever worked right. I see threads highlighted that I've read and I see threads that I haven't read not highlighted all the time. Its just fucked up, always has been.
