FBI Warned Democrats of Hacking, Wasn't Taken Seriously

There are several articles on this from a few months ago. To me it sounds like the Dems were afraid to pick up the phone and talk to the FBI under the "guilty parties don't phone the police" policy.

Federal investigators tried to warn the Democratic National Committee about a potential intrusion in their computer network months before the party moved to try to fix the problem, U.S. officials briefed on the probe tell CNN.

The revelation raises questions about whether the DNC could have done more to limit the damage done by hackers suspected of working for Russian intelligence.
The DNC brought in consultants from the private security firm CrowdStrike in April. And by the time suspected Russian hackers were kicked out of the DNC network in June, the hackers had been inside for about a year.

In a meeting with senior officials at the campaign’s Brooklyn headquarters, FBI agents laid out concerns that cyberhackers had used so-called spear-phishing emails as part of an attempt to penetrate the campaign’s computers, the sources said. One of the sources said agents conducting a national security investigation asked the Clinton campaign to turn over internal computer logs as well as the personal email addresses of senior campaign officials. But the campaign, through its lawyers, declined to provide the data, deciding that the FBI’s request for sensitive personal and campaign information data was too broad and intrusive, the source said.

A second source who had been briefed on the matter and who confirmed the Brooklyn meeting said agents provided no specific information to the campaign about the identity of the cyberhackers or whether they were associated with a foreign government. The source said the campaign was already aware of attempts to penetrate its computers and had taken steps to thwart them, emphasizing that there is still no evidence that the campaign’s computers had actually been successfully penetrated.

In a new deep-dive into the Russian cyberattack on the Democratic National Committee, The New York Times on Tuesday reported that “a series of missed signals, slow responses and a continuing underestimation of the seriousness of the cyberattack” only worsened the situation. The Times unearthed evidence suggesting DNC staffers ignored the threat or only superficially attempted to deal with it. When a DNC tech-support contractor received calls from the FBI warning of a hacker breach of a protected network, the tech worker reportedly conducted a cursory search of the DNC computer network to look for hints of intrusions. According to his own memos, the support staffer didn’t investigate much because “I had no way of differentiating the call I just received from a prank call.” Internal memos additionally show the DNC had the means to install advanced protection systems, but only “had a standard email spam-filtering service, intended to block phishing attacks and malware created to resemble legitimate email.” At another point of the report, the Times revealed that John Podesta’s emails were exposed to the hackers because of a typo. When Podesta received a phishing email prompting him to click a button, a Clinton aide mistakenly responded that “This is a legitimate email,” when he meant to type “illegitimate” to warn the campaign chief off the hacker email.
