Frenchman Street in NO?

I've heard a little about Frenchman Street, what will I find there? Looking for good places to eat, listen to music and dance. I'll be there Thursday afternoon and leaving Sunday, staying on Canal. Do I need a cab from Canal and Bourbon to get to Frenchman Street? I'm excited to get away and maybe meet up with friends!!

Frenchman is about 14-15 blocks from Canal. If you're up for the walk, take Bourbon or Royal as far as Jackson Square. Then I'd walk over to Decatur to continue on to Frenchman. Otherwise, catch a cab. If you're going back to Canal in the wee hours of the morning, catch a cab to avoid being a crime statistic.

On weekends Frenchman really comes alive after 10 pm.

Frenchman and Decatur almost always have some street musicians, some of whom are very good and have traveled from afar to play in New Orleans. Drop a buck or two in their guitar case.
Thank you. I will try them out.
+1. Praline Connection is not to be missed. Good music after 10 pm. Look on line to see who is playing.
