Rise in HIV in Austin

Statesman reported yesterday that there is a rise in HIV cases among those under the age of 18 in central Texas. I know that this (HIV) is a threat in our society, and we in the hobby seem to take every precaution to protect ourselves, but what this statistic tells me is that whatever they are teaching in Sex Ed isn't sinking in with the youth. Thoughts?

It hasn't sunk in with many older people, either.

Thanks to modern medicine, HIV is no longer a near-term death sentence. That is a good thing, but I think it has made many people complacent about it.

And yet the ladies get offended when we wonder aloud about how thin or unhealthy a lady looks.

As i tend to meet a number of 18-21 young ladies over the recent years I've noticed as well as commented more than once on how this generation seems headed back along the lines of the generation of "free love".... kids are trying everything and trying it younger.

Totally agree with Whispers.

I went to take a HIV/STD test least year and the obviously gay counselor literally said " do you shoot drugs or receive anal sex?"... I said "no" which is true and he said... "no need to take it as long as you answered truthfully".....

However, I am going to take a test because I have met someone I want to have sex with civie wise and not use birth control for my piece of mind. Maybe I will do like the NFL guy and post my negative results for all to see lol

That's the culture now. Look at Facebook. You got teenagers displaying almost naked pictures of themselves on Facebook, emailing naked pics of themselves from cell phones, sexting is on the rise among teens, tv shows glorifying sex, a high school wanted to give out condoms at a prom, teen celebrities encouraging the behavior because sex sells, drugs and drinking alcohol especially smoking weed is on the rise with teens which we all know leads to a lot of unprotected sex. I'm in mid-40's and I got teenage girls to college girls coming on to me all the time. Just last year I help a mother and her two gorgeous teenage daughters (Gymnasts, cheerleaders), who were wearing very short gymnastic shorts and tops, change their flat tire and the girls were all over me which I found annoying. 13 and 14 yrs olds. I told their mother to do something about her daughters. Advertisers prey on kids. It is what it is.

Abstinence only education and not teaching how to use a condom is the norm in our Wonderful Texas high schools.

Apparently its working out great.

I was lucky enough to get sex-ed in the Texas school system. Definitely in middle school when I was not in AISD, but I don't remember getting sex-ed in AISD. The class had me very interested, fascinated, over all more knowledgeable about my cycle, using protection, and preventing pregnancy.

So I don't have kids but if there is no sex-ed in schools, isn't that the parents job. What do you guys think?

Although, I don't know how smoking equates unprotected sex, kingorpawn is right; sexual deviance is more acceptable these days.

Not to mention all of the subtle implicit sexual nature of common activities in our culture.
For example, when at a High School football game last year I found an air of discomfort (or maybe it was just me being prudish? naaah!) when the cheerleaders on the side lines were facing us standing on top of each other with one leg erect in the air, basically showing us their who-ha several times. Well I'm sure their legs weren't the only things erect.
While this kind of acrobatics is fascinating, there was a sense of discomfort amongst the crowd when these young girls flashed their privates, basically dressed in stripper skirts and underwear, to the people in the bleachers at eye level. I immediately told myself no daughter of mine will be doing all that. Hypocrite I know (that's why no kids thus far).

At the same time, I suppose those years are hormonally charged, so any knowledge a parent can give their kids will help curb some of the devastation that is possible.

IMO sex ed needs to come from parents and not in school. Parents just want to ignore that and not teach them about sex. Just like everything else today TV,video games, other people, and the internet is were kids get there education.

Very true. I see a trend of parents who are not to keen on teaching their kids much of anything. I suppose thats why people send their kids to a school in the first place. Sorry if that sounds rude to the majority of parents out there including my own, but I'm an avid homeschool supporter..... another reason why I haven't had kids.
