Police Monitoring Computers?

I am taking a criminal justice course and we have reached the amendment section. Theres a section that says anything that is online is not private information and that police monitor certain sites and who visits them.

Is that true? Does anyone know anything about this?
Is our beloved eccie one of those sites?

And if this is true doesnt that mean that Police departments know who we are etc.

What do ya'll think of this. Will it deter you from hobbying or is it possible to mask our computer identities

I'm at kinkos now. I saw one of those crime shows where the guy blocked his IP address is that possible/legal or TV nonsense.

I'm certainly no expert, but my understanding is that, yes, yer IP address can give you away. BUT, LE would need to subpoena your Internet Provider for that info. So, unless the crime you've committed is especially heinous, or you're, oh, I dunno, the Governor of New York, or a Senator from Idaho, I don't think they'll come after you for getting a little pooty-tang.

What we discussed was that its anything online is public domain and doesnt need a subpoena.

The whole thing about flagging websites and tracking the users sounded fairly legitamte because they do it for the sickos with kidy porn.

The information that is online is in the public domain, ie: anyone can read it. However the information stored on servers is not and requires court action to obtain.

At least, that's how I understands it.

The police can patrol cites or chat rooms all they want they can flag print or save anything that is online. However the only idenifying information they can get, unless you post your personal info yourself, is an ip address. In order for them to find out who that ip address belongs to the must get a subpoena either from a judge or a grand jury. This is true whether it is a child porn case or they want access to your facebook page. Many of the Internet providers will charge for each address they have to make records for so it could get very expensive, most law enforcement agencies have neither the funds or the probable cause to do this for everyone they on a site like this or in a chat room.

I think the membership here is up to 30,000. Certainly, they are never going to be able or even try to obtain thousands of warrants. However, if they saw something that they felt was worth investigating....yes they could. The FBI does this often for money-laundering, the above mentioned activity along with other crimes.

Everything posted is public and LE does go on BP, and Craigslist for sure. Not sure about Eccie, but it would not be that difficult. Most depts right now are not messing with escorts especially the smaller depts, because they simply do not have the man power. Streetwalkers are the target of choice because its out in the open.
I think as hobbiest in whole we need to stay away from the streetwalkers, undergae girls, or girls with pimps because they are the main targets.

It's tough to know what sites the police monitor but it's likely they're off and on the ones that get a lot of activity; especially those mentioned in this thread since DPD has been on a quest to ruin everyone's fun for quite a while now!

This is true, I know Yahoo charges between $20-$40 depending on what info LE wants, like access to an email account, registration info, or upto $80 for info on an entire user group, etc. The charges are "per account".

It would be naive to thinck LE is not monitoring SHMBs, and not just the public forums.
