Thinking of making my first visit there?

Hey guys thinking of visiting the south texas area any suggestions
What areas are best to stay in now a days?
Any hotels that I should avoid?
I've read a few alerts and I've noticed there has been a few incidents.
any info would be helpful.
Also let me know if you think I should head that way this week.

Most of the girls stay on SPID, some downtown at the Omni. Omni is upscale, but parking is a pain for your guests.
