It's not gonorrhea that's the problem. Sad that's std's are usually used to get readers attention. It's a new breed of bacteria that does not respond to traditional antibiotics. It impacts a majority of infections including sti's. Now they are trying to understand the evolution of those new bacteria. While bacteria has evolved, our system for destroying it has not kept pace.

There was a "problem" in that area with servicemembers returning from S.E. Asia in the 60's - 70's .. and many were quarantined "off shore" for various periods of time.

Indeed there was a problem with drug resistant STDs at the end of the Vietnam war, but there were other antibiotics to treat it. Now there are few or none.
There has also been speculation of upswing in prostatectomy cancer in vietnam vets is related to earlier STDs.
