10 years ago, illegal immigration was in the party platform. it was gone in last years election.
strangely enough, they took up the open borders position by being non-offensive about it at the expense of the nations security.
Even Sanders was against illegal immigration. He was attacked for it. He later "evolved" on this issue.
corporations played part of their problem with HB visa abuse.

Every time i hear a politician say our immigration systems broken i have to shout at the TV screen "NO its not, what's broken is our ENFORCEMENT of our laws for immigration, and the practically NO border securty.. How many times have we heard of "X person did crime Y and its been found that he's been deported 7+ times before.."?
