Drilling A Square Hole

I did not think that drilling a perfectly square hole was possible, but apparently it is if you develop the right tool.

You have to admire the ingenuity of the Asian craftsmen.

. . . We need more of this type of creativity in the USA to jump start our economy!

You can put your weed in there Man.
I won't say how I know because it would reveal too much about what I do in the real world, but this is nothing new, in fact, the proccess dates back to the mid 30's.

There are all sorts of things going on in the machining and manufacturing world that are simply mindboggling. Computer Aid Machining, (CAM), and Computer Aid Design, (CAD), have made it possible to manufacture extremely complicated machine parts in thirs world countrys. Human Beings have very little to do with the entire proccess.

For all of you old Hot Rodders, take a look.
Here's a simpler vid that explains the technique.

Thanks, Sidewinder, but I think you are missing the true magic and the real essence of this particular process.

The video you posted shows the procedure for something resembling a square, but the corners are round. That is not technically a square.

The real magic is coming up with a rotating device and special tool that drills square holes that have perfect corners.

This is not something that came up in the 1930s as js erroneously spouted off. He is probably referring to the same type of hole as your video shows.

This process is something developed only fairly recently, but not everyone appreciates such artistic endeavors.
Thanks for posting; very interesting.

This idea is very beautiful; I had no idea that such a technique was possible.

Sidewinder, the first thing I thought of when I saw your vid's animation was the rotor in a Wankel (rotary) engine of the type introduced by Mazda back in the 1970s.

One of my favorite stories is about an American company that was proud of a micro drill bit they had made..They sent it to their sister company in Germany to show it off.

The sister company in Germany sent it back with a hole drilled through it's center. No message was attached.

In the early days of NASA a bunch of money was spent on developing an electric razor that would vacuum shavings so that they would not float around in the cockpits of space craft and crap up the electronics.

Some astronaut suggested a safety razor and shaving cream.
