October 30, 1973, Congress initiates impeachment proceedings against Nixon.

October 31, 1973, Congress initiates impeachment proceedings against Trump.

In both instances, democrats vote overwhelming for it.

Four months later on February 6, 1974, the formal process was authorized in a nearly unanimous vote.

looks like Pelosi is shooting for February 2020.

past impeachment hearings took before or after campaign season, not during.

Andrew Johnson, impeachment hearing 1 year before campaign season.

Richard Nixon, impeachment hearing 1 year after election to 2nd term.

Bill Clinton, impeachment hearing 1 year before campaign season.

the timing of it is tricky. January 2020 is the start of the Presidential campaign season. this is going into uncharted territory.

Taking all polls into consideration, Trump's approval rating by RealClearPolitics is 42.8%, or -11,3%, and trending downward. According to FiveThirtyEight the approval rating is 40.9%, also trending downward. A POTUS seeking reelection has never won with a negative approval rating. Certainly history can be made in 2020, but it does not look good right now for Trump.

This is despite people saying the economy is fine. There are obviously other factors on the minds of voters. Maybe the polling companies should only poll those who attend Trump's political rallies. Even Rasmussen, notorious for being pro-Republican, has Trump at -9% approval rating, which I believe is a record on the negative side.
