Planning A Visit 1st time.... any areas I should stay away from...

So I am planning a trip.
Someone told me before when I was going tk come and plans fell through where to stay away from.... but i cant seem to find the info...

Also next weekend is their any football games or anything of the such leading into the week...... lol.
That will make things outrageously difficult or expensive?

Seems like I'm getting a lot of north and south... maybe I should stay 1 night north and 1 night south....?
I'm wondering though....sat and sun alternate or Sunday and Monday alternate?....hmmmmm
Any ideas on south hotel locations...?
