California Bay Area Hobby travel tips?

Hello all!
Planning a trip in the future, but wanted to know what area of the bay is the "best" place to play?
I know that San Fransisco can be congested and difficult to navigate, especially on a time constraint. Want to stay close to that area so I can visit family.
Appreciate hotel suggestions as well!

I used to love staying at the holiday inn Chinatown. Within walking distance to so many places, Chinatown, fishermans wharf, north beach. Pier 39 used to have good restaurants right on the water.

If you stay there, insist on a room up high with a view of Coit Tower and the golden gate.
