Staples customer who told woman to wear mask is thrown to ground, has broken leg

A 54-year-old New Jersey woman suffered a broken leg after she was thrown to the ground in a Staples by another customer whom she had told to wear a mask, authorities said.

Police have released surveillance video from the incident that occurred at about 3:19 p.m. Wednesday at a Staples in Hackensack.

Margot Kagan, of Teaneck, told police she was using a fax machine at the store when a woman with a mask pulled down below her mouth approached a machine next to her. Kagan, who, according to police, had a liver transplant four months ago and was walking with a cane, told the woman to put her mask on.

"The suspect became angry and yelled at the victim, who picked up her walking cane and pointed it directly at the suspect, coming within inches of the suspect's chest," said Capt. Darrin DeWitt, a detective with the Hackensack Police Department.

The woman then yelled at Kagan, violently threw her to the ground and left the store, DeWitt said.

Kagan was taken to a hospital where she was diagnosed with a fractured left tibia, according to DeWitt.

Gov. Phil Murphy has said all residents must wear face coverings in stores.

Police are seeking to identify the suspect.

Kagan did not immediately respond to a voicemail message and multiple calls seeking comment Friday.

It's the funny in me. No racism. Unless it's funny. And I'll be the judge.

Off we go . . .

It is pretty bad if you do that to someone with a cane. It's not like that lady swung her cane at her. She was probably just scared and wanted to keep her away because the lady looked pretty aggressive when she approached her. She was obviously just a fragile lady if she has a fucking cane. That wasn't necessary. If you don't like that she is not wearing a mask, simply keep your distance from her and go about your business. That's just my opinion though.

You already said you were drunk. Go to bed and sleep it off.

The lady who threw the lady to the ground will be arrested. She grabbed the cane. Her finger prints are on it. Those are the facts.

And I'm going to get drunk by noon tomorrow. Goodnight and God speed.

Sorry if you didn't catch my drunken humor.
If you are walking with a cane, it's probably not a good idea to tell someone else what to do, and get into a confrontation. At that point in your life/health, you need to go tell the management and have them enforce the mask policy. They can probably find this person, but after that cane was raised, there's a good case for self-defense IMHO, given blunt-force objects like canes can be considered "deadly weapons" in New Jersey.

You're good, 9500. Sleep well and be well.

SecretE, you definitely interpreted that video a lot differently than I did. A jury will have the final say about it so I won't argue with you about it. The woman with the cane did not initiate the aggression to me and she was probably scared that she was going to get her ass kicked... I get your point though.

you can't make that case as the assailant moved toward the woman in a threatening matter and while there is no audio i'm quite sure her tone was hostile. the woman's right to prevent an assault overrides your argument.

New Jersey already had a "masks required" in stores before this .. meaning it was law when this woman pulled down her mask in clear violation of the law.

now NJ is making masks a requirement OUTDOORS too .. if social distancing can't be maintained.

New Jersey issues statewide order to wear face masks outdoors

bottom line most (all) of the factors favors the assaulted woman. it was law to have a mask on, she had the right to protect herself from exposure. the staff was negligent. all the black woman has is racism.

no way this woman who was assaulted does not win this issue.
