Who remebers, "Lagrange"?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I'm dating myslef here but let's here from the members that remember/have first-hand stories about hobying in Lagrange, TX.

Stealthguy, I guess I'm dating myself as well.

I grew up 14 miles from the LaGrange chicken ranch. A buddy and myself saved up $5.00 each when I was 14 and drove up to the cathouse and the very large black woman laughed at us and told us to come back in a few years. So, in about 1969, I had a boot and saddle shop in LaGrange and the ladies would come into my shop and buy nice, expensive reptile boots and I in turn visited them on a regular basis. Fifty dollars for an hour. All bareback but no kissing. Sheriff Flournoy who was the Sheriff that helped keep them in business occasionally taught Sunday school class at the local Baptist Church. Our family Doctor, H. C Paine, was also there doctor. When I was a kid and go to the doctor I always noticed there would be a couple of very pretty girls in his waiting room. I do remember one of the gals that I'd visit every month or so, was working on her Masters at UT. I could go on and on but don't want to hog the thread...lol.

Let's up the antie a little bit. Anyone remember play/movie, "Best Little Whore House in Texas"? Lots of true stuff here (names, places, etc. changed to protect the guilty).

i never visited the Chicken Ranch in LaGrange, but did eat at the restaurant they turned it into on upper greenville ave, north of park lane and south of pineland. i think the owner went broke and it either got torn down or built around into a small 2 story office building. [web street view "phoenix dr and grennville ave, dallas tx" then go south a bit, then look east - it was located where the small blue glass building now is].

i have listened to "La Grange" by ZZ Top many a time, as well as the version that Brave Combo does [jeffrey, the sax player, does a spectacular job "singing" the verses].


also, as noted in the thread that stealthguy linked, i visited the chicken ranch in pahrump, nev. neither the madam nor alexis [my oral consultant for the afternoon] knew anything about the La Grange Chicken Ranch.

speaking of brave combo...i used to get my hair cut, when it was about waist length (seriously), by bubba hernandez' (former bass player) sister in denton, in a small salon across the alley from jim's diner. they played a fantastic set at club dada recently, where my brother is a bartender.

yep, that timeframe sounds about right. it was soon after i moved to dallas.
i was so excited about it until i learned it was going to be a restaurant.

In 1977 part of the house and the original furniture were moved to Dallas, where it was opened as a restaurant, with Milton as the hostess. The restaurant closed in 1978.[1]"

They moved the house to McKinney Avenue about 15 years ago and tried to make a restaurant out of it. It failed and was torn down. The house was part of Texas history. Many good memories.

15 yrs ago is 1996. i thought the house went bye-bye in the early 80s.

ok, architectural/historical designation fonts of knowledge, what's the scoop on the chicken ranch??

I was very happy and proud to finally learn how to play that song on the drums. It has that cool triplet " Texas Shuffle" on the snare drum like you here in a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughn stuff.
I never get tired of that song. I would have sure visited the Ranch if I had only gotten here in time

I am too young to know the pleasures of the original Chicken Ranch. But I do remember Marvin Zindler getting pulled through his car window by the sheriff. Good tv is good tv.

I never got the chance to sample, but if it could inspire a Broadway musical, a Dolly Parton/Burt Reynolds movie, AND a legendary rock band's icon song, ...

Well, that must've some good chicken.

There were two brothels operating in that part of Texas. One was the famous Chicken Ranch and the other was in Sealy Texas. The one in Sealy was an old hotel near the Key Truck Stop, not as famous as the chicken ranch, but the women were fine, and yes it was all bareback then.

When you walked into the Sealy Brothel, it was dark, the only light was from a JuteBox, the ladies were all in swim suits, high heels and sitting around a U-shaped bench. You picked the lady and she would take you to her room. You were first inspected, this was almost enough for you to bust a nut, hey I was 18 so give me a break. After being inspected, the lady would take your $10.00 thats right ten dollars to the madam and upon her return you were led over to the sink and a good soapy wash job was done on your johnson and yes I lost it there. But being 18 I was ready to go again in about 5 minutes. Of course you had to pay another $10.00 but you finally got to the best part and whenn you were done the nice lady would wash you once again and you were ready for the drive home, which for me as in Houston.

The Chicken Ranch and Sealy brothels were closed of course by Marvin Zindler and the rest is history.
