Songs about the Hobby

There was a thread a long time ago, maybe on aspd I don't remember, but I never had a chance to participate so here is mine, look forward to seeing others and hearing responses on this one.

Let Him Roll
Guy Clark

Well, he was wino, tried and true.
Done about everything there is to do.
He worked on freighters, an' he'd worked in bars.
He worked on farms, an' he'd worked on cars.
It was white port that put that look in his eye,
Grown men get when they need to cry.
We sat down on the curb to rest,
And his head just fell down on his chest.

He says: "Every single day it gets,
"Just a little bit harder to handle and yet. . ."
Then he lost the thread and his mind got cluttered,
And the words just rolled off down the gutter.

Well, he was elevator man in a cheap hotel,
In exchange for the rent on a one room cell.
An' he's old: years beyond his time,
No thanks to the world, and the white port wine.

So he said: "Son." He always called me son.
Said: "Life for you has just begun."
An' then he told me the story I'd heard before
How he fell in love with a Dallas whore.

Now, he could cut through the years to the very night,
When it ended in a whore house fight.
And she turned his last proposal down,
In favor of being a girl about town.

Now it's been seventeen years, right in line,
He ain't been straight in none of the time.
It's too many days of fightin' the weather,
An' too many nights of not being together.
So he died.

Instrumental break.

An' when they went through his personal effects,
In among the stubs from the welfare checks,
Was a crumblin' picture of a girl in a door,
And an address in Dallas and nothing more.

An' the welfare people provided the priest,
A couple from the mission down the street,
Sang "Amazing Grace", and no one cried,
'Cept some lady in black, way off to the side.

We all left and she's standing there,
A black veil covering her silver hair.
Ol' One-Eyed John said her name was Alice,
An' she used to be a whore in Dallas.

So let him roar, Lord, let him roll.
I bet he's gone to Dallas, rest his soul.
Just you let him roll, Lord, let him roar
He always said that heaven
Was just a Dallas whore.

Just you let him roar, Lord, let him roll.
I bet he's gone to Dallas, rest his soul

ZZ Top's La Grange was about the Chicken Ranch.
"Hotel California"

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
"This could be Heaven or this could be Hell"
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain,
"Please bring me my wine"
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine"
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device"
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
"Relax, " said the night man,
"We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave! "

"You Shook Me All Night Long" --ac/dc

She was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean
Was the best damn woman that I ever seen
She had the sightless eyes, telling me no lies
Knocking me out with those American thighs

Taking more than her share, had me fighting for air
She told me to come but I was already there
The walls start shaking, earth was quaking
My mind was aching, we were making it

And you shook me all night long
Yeah, you shook me all night long

Working double time on the seduction line
She's one of a kind, she's just mine, all mine
Wanted no applause, it's just another course
Made a meal outta me and come back for more

Had to cool me down to take another round
Back in the ring to take another swing
The walls start shaking, earth was quaking
My mind was aching, we were making it

And you shook me all night long
Yeah, you shook me all night long
You got me goin', shook me all night long
You had me shaking and you shook me all night long
Yeah, you shook me, baby, you took me

You shook me all night long
Yeah, you shook me all night long
You really got me and you shook me all night long
You got me goin' and you shook me all night long
Yeah, you shook me then you took me all night long

Don't forget the late great Donna Summer

"Bad Girls"

Bad girls Talking about the sad girls Sad girls Talking about bad girls, yeah

See them out on the street at night, walkin' Picking up on all kinds of strangers If the price is right You can't score if you're pocket's tight But you want a good time You ask yourself who they are Like everybody else They come from near and far Bad girls, yeah

Bad girls Talking about the sad girls, yeah Sad girls Talking about bad girls, yeah

Friday night and the strip is hot Sun's gone down and they're out to trot Spirit's high and legs look hot Do you wanna get down Now don't you ask yourself who they are Like everybody else, they wanna be a star

Bad girl Sad girl, you're such a naughty bad girl Beep-Beep, uh-uh You bad girl you sad girl Your such a dirty bad girl Beep-Beep, uh-uh

Now you and me we're both the same But you call yourself by different names Now your mama won't like it when she finds out That her girl is out at night

Hey, Mister, have you got a dime Mister, do you want to spent some time Oh, yeah I got what you want, you got what I need I'll be your baby, come and spend it on me Hey, Mister I'll spend some time with you

Flight of the Conchords - You don't have to be a Prostitute

Ooooh ooooh
It's a cold night
Beneath the street lights
There's a man whose pants are too tight
Oh no, his pants are too tight
(My pants are too tight!)

He stands there
An empty stare
Trying to make enough money for his cab fare home
He'll have to walk home tonight
(Don't have enough for the ride)

Les Miserables - Lovely Ladies

I smell women
Smell 'em in the air
Think I'll drop my anchor
In that harbor over there

Lovely ladies
Smell 'em through the smoke
Seven days at sea can make you hungry for a poke
Even stokers need a little stoke!

Lovely ladies Waiting for a bite
Waiting for the customers Who only come at night
Lovely ladies Ready for the call
Standing up or lying down or any way at all
Bargain prices up against the wall....
