Bumping old threads

So I am newer here obviously, and I am just searching around and keep coming upon older posts and seeing where mods say be mindful of the posts age, bumping old threads, then close the thread. I just was wondering, if there is a time limit (keep in mind I have no idea how the magical internet and websites actually work) but wouldn't it save all you mods a ton of headache if the threads on encounters just automatically closed after a predetermined period of time?

The rule is 30 days past the last post. We ask the members to check the dates prior to posting so there is no reason to automatically close them, this could cause more issues.

I thought the 30 day rule only applied to reviews?
