I say go minimalist. When I go to a site, I look for three things, the gallery, donations, and if possible, services provided. Anything beyond that is wasted on most men.

faster downloads, when you open msn on some computers it has to download all those banners, although most have faster internet there are some that do not.

Google limited their front page to what you see, nothing can be added, and it downloads quick everywhere, Bing copied their style.

You can provide links to those who want more, nobody wants to wait for 10 1mb images to download.
