Sex: Is it Necessary?

setman's Avatar
You can only live for 10 minutes without oxygen.

You can only live for 10 days without water.

You can live for several weeks without food.

But, no one has ever died from not have sex.

Is sex only a WANT,

Or is sex a real NEED?

Enjoy yourself.

Stay safe.

Be cool.

Yes, I would say it is a need, just like a healthy lifestyle is a need.

Physically, it is better to be sexually active.
Emotionally, it is better to be sexually active.

In a micro sense, sex is not a need. In a macro sense, sex is essential for survival. Granted, no body has ever died from a lack of sex. On the flip side, nobody would exist without sex.

Its a need for sure

If you won't die without it, it's not a need..as if lol. Granted, it does have many benefits that help with mood, physical stamina and depression, but other things can also replace sex and do the same thing. I know many guys in their 40s who are still virgins, and they are actually not killing themselves.

If I had to choose between giving up sex, or giving up my home or SUV...later sex! Then again, sex is what paid for them, so it would have to be after I quit providing lol.

OK SNL...you can't use that nut to base it on lol. Maslow....cmon now. Funny, I don't recall sex being at the bottom. It was food, water, air and shelter when I was a freshman.
Sex is not needed to continue YOUR life, no, but neither is CLEAN water, WARMED & COOLED shelter, or GOOD TASTING food. Now, try living without those...

Sex is not a NEED, true, but it does give you a greater quality of life, and isn't that what we all strive for?

I could very well live without many of those things...did it several times during hurricanes. I would not want to do it again for sure, but I would give up sex before giving up AC lol. My quality of life is certainly not defined by how many guys I screw.

I could think of a million other things I would put in that category..friends, family, health, success, a good spiritual life, sports, fitness, etc. Sex is fun and all, but I would not put it with quality of life unless of course it was with my partner..which I don't have.

A need is something that is necessary for organisms to live a healthy life. Needs are distinguished from wants because a deficiency would cause a clear negative outcome, such as dysfunction or death.

Get as technical as you want LR lol , I still "need" it lol In fact I think I would die without it lol, Life would sure suck big time without it
wait till you get my age, bet you change your mind lol

You just need more of something else SNL...trust me, sex is not the end all be all.
The act of "Sex" itself is not a NEED....However, a famous study by phychologist Harry Harlow has shown that "human touch" is not simply a want, but a need for proper development.

Human touch as in a mother and a child, friendship maybe, but I hesitate to believe the rest. Granted, it does make you feel better, loved, wanted etc. and some people "need" those things to strive, but not all. Then again, perception is reality. If I told myself over and over again that I needed x, I would probably manifest signs of withdrawls if I didn't have it. Anything that the mind can convince you of, can certainly become a need.
For some older men there is a need for at least something like sex. My uroligist told me that I was having repeated prostate infections because I did not ejaculate often enough.

Yes, I could do that through self service, but it would be more stimulating, more enjoyable and likely provide a more...siginficant result if I had a lady to help me get there.

Would I die from those prostate problems? I hope not, but believe me they are NOT fun.

Well yes and no!! It's also been proven that patients heal much quicker when not only their basic needs are met but also the compassion and human touch needs are met. The ederly in nursing homes have also been studied and found to have this same need. So although, I do agree with you that the act of sex itself isn't a "need". I do believe that humans do need "affectionate touch".
