Read a couple of books: One by Jarad Diamond is called simply, "Collapse". This is a scholarly examination of the rise and fall of a number of civilizations, from Easter Island to the Viking settlement of Greenland and the pre-Puebloan civilization in Chaco Canyon.

A novel called "The last Tribe" postulates a world wide pandemic that is survivable by one person in a million. Its not a great novel, but does make you think it over.

For a look at what happened in the more distant past, read "1177" by Clancy. OK, this is a bit of tedious history but . . .This has to do with the collapse of every civilization in the Mediterranean region at the end of the Bronze Age around 12,000 to 11,00 BC. Not about a pandemic, it never the less it describes a parallel with our global economy and the disruptions that could bring it down by interrupting international trade. Sound failure?
