eBay gift cards

What’s up with some providers asking for gift cards or a deposit up front ? Is this the norm now ?

I have never been asked for deposits, but I exclusively use reputable providers and agencies. Asking for a deposit is usually a sign it could be a scam, unless you are expecting a provider to have to travel from another city to see you.
