Rednecks

Are you proud or would you be offended to be labelled a redneck?

A gentlemen from houston was telling me how the media with all those redneck "reality" shows are giving a bad impression of how texas is. Texas is not redneck. Your thoughts?
There is good redneck and bad redneck just like everything else. Reality TV is total bullshit, they pick the worst of the worst and set them up to act stupider.

I say I am proud of these parts of redneck-ism: humility, not putting on airs, being close to the land, loyalty to family, respect for elders, strong sense of community.

I am not proud of these parts of redneck-ism: close-mindedness, racism, cronyism, hypocrisy, fear of outsiders, resistance to learning.
Note to the "gentleman from Houston" . . . if you're watching reality shows and you think it reflects badly on you or yours (i.e. "Texas"), it might be time to take a large look around you!

P.S. Texas is not the only state in the South. Texas is actually Mexico.
I'm a hillbilly so yes, I would be offended to be called a redneck.

Whoever said Texas isn't redneck, has obviously not visited East Texas or the Texarkana area. I could add a few places in far West Texas, as well LOL. Hell, they are peppered all over the place. However, not all rednecks possess the close-minded, racist, ignorant qualities that they are frequently stereotyped by.
A reality show about a kind hearted, hard-working farmer isn't as much fun to watch as a blathering idiot. (I'm suddenly hearing Don Henley's 'Dirty Laundry' lyrics LOL)

I think there are varying degrees of rednecks.

Almost everything on TV, especially EVERY f'n reality show is STAGED...I was once asked to be a paid participant on a Cheaters episode. It's all a joke and about HYPE and RATINGS.

There are more rednecks per capita in Missouri than Texas.
