Buy Sex Lose Everything Billboards in Phoenix

ABC15 PHOENIX - A billboard along an exit from Phoenix Sky Harbor airport could give visitors the wrong impression, according to some Valley-based travelers.

The billboard, along 44th Street and the PHX Sky Train route, urges men not to buy sex from prostitutes.

"We need to remove it, take it down," said John Rejebian, who flew home to Phoenix Thursday night from Houston and left the airport on the Sky Train.

"I think the public needs to be spared these things,” Rejebian said.

The organization is a collaboration among eleven cities "committed to reducing demand for prostitution by 20 percent by the end of 2017," according to a City of Phoenix website.

"Phoenix has gone after the demand side of this crime by making booking mandatory for anyone arrested for this crime," Phoenix Councilman Jim Waring said in a July statement. "The campaign is a reminder to would-be purchasers of sex that getting arrested will have real legal and personal consequences."

Dr. Jon McCaine, who has taught court-sanctioned classes to men convicted of soliciting a prostitute, believes the billboard could persuade some men to avoid paying for sex.

"The people it may deter are the everyday guys who are looking for a time out on the town," McCaine said.
