....it really is freedom in action.....the "system" works....

A private company offered a product that some people liked and other people didn't like.

The people that didn't like it were very vocal in their opposition. They protested. "The American way."

Enough people were against it that the private company decided in was in its best interests to stop offering the product. Sure some consumers are deprived of a product they found valuable but no one forced CL to do anything....

If CL chose to block the listing of such services in the US, they did so because of all the public and media backlash. So really you can only blame your own citizens. Of course they're going to respond in a way that will attempt to protect their image. They could have just taken the button out for the US - and I find it amusing that they put up "censored". Perhaps a bit of a subtle jab at the public forcing them into an action they don't believe in.

We can view it in Canada, mostly because Canadians don't care and so CL doesn't get reams of bad press, angry individuals or hate mail. They just don't hear much from us. Here social conservatism and conservative politics are not one in the same and it's been something we're proud of, though our current conservative government seems to be determined to change that (unfortunately). People don't really care about prostitution, porn and drugs as long as day to day life is peaceful for the general public.

At the end of the day, I agree with ALT. CL's actions are the ultimate act of free choice -they chose to do something of their own will, even though some people wouldn't like it. Isn't that the point? That you don't have to agree with someone's decisions, just tolerate it, because they have the right to choose?

And if it's a freedom of choice, then really, all you can blame is the US media and US citizens for making it so difficult for them.

It really isn't all that different than the way a lot of "big" retailers deal with adult products (mags, videos, toys, etc.). Sure they could make money selling them but it pisses off some of their consumers so they look at the "big picture" and decide not to stock them. As a result if you want to buy a dildo you can't get it at Target but have to go to a place with a name like "XXX-Adult World" -- but the Gov't isn't telling Target they can't sell dildos.

Not to often will atlcomedy, Summerhill and WTF be in agreement but this seems to be one of them.
