How did you guys start off?

Let me start off by saying I'm a newbie. Not sure if the hobby is for me but I've always been interested in trying it at least once. For obvious reasons I'm having some difficultly actually meeting anyone because I don't have any references. I don't necessarily like the idea of sending all my personal information to a complete stranger over the internet for the screening; especially when it's something of this nature. I completely understand the reasoning behind the screening but I was just wondering if theres any other way to go about this. Do I just have to bite the bullet and go for it? Or are there other options? Any information you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated!
The only other option would be for you to join P411 or date-check. However; you will have to give out your personal information on there as well. My suggestion is to find a lady who is well reviewed and trusted to visit with. Once you pass her screening, you will be on your way to getting more references. There are plenty of ladies out there like myself who have been around for years and is well reviewed that you can trust your personal information with. Good luck!

Being cautious is always a good thing. First, Look for a newbie friendly lady near you. Most might do some screening, but not every lady is the same. The fact that you are on this site, is helpful to some ladies. You just might get lucky. Some really don't do too much screening, is any at all. Start a discussion with some of the ladies near you that you might be interested in. You might be surprised at how understanding many of the ladies are. Unless you really want to, you don't need P41! I know many here do like it, but they will want just as much, if not more info than your are afraid of giving to the ladies here. Finally, if you really want to meet a lady, check them out. It really isn't that hard to find the good ones from the flakes. Many of the ladies here are not just fun but as concerned about security and privacy as you are. Good luck!

Do not use your smart phone to browse with. Period. Thats it for me. Others feel free to chime in for him.

Thus far GFE Juliette has given you the best advise. In starting out you must see about two 'Newbie friendly' providers for establishing references before you can begin to schedule with your 'other preferences'.
P411 can be a shortcut, but a bit expensive.
Think of it this way; the ladies are taking a big risk by being a provider. You must take a smaller risk by exposing something of your RW (Real World) identity, just enough that the lady can feel that you are a safe and OK 'date'.
I can't say this any clearer: STAY AWAY FROM BACKPAGE! At least until you've got a year or more of experience. I've never used it.
Here was my progression:

Hobby email.
Lurked on Eccie for a while.
Hobby phone.
Posted an ISO for a newbie friendly provider.
Took the recommendation and set an appointment.
2nd provider took 1st provider's reference.
Both were P411 members, giving me 2 OKs for their 6 months free (w/ no info given)
Happy camper since.

JAH
My intro was just like Jahpublishing except it started with a planned body rub only but quickly advanced! I started 3-4 weeks ago with no references. I know have 5 references and my first 6 weeks of p411 free. Stay away from backpage until you are REAL experienced to decipher trash from a gem. Start with an ISO for a newbie friendly provider in your specific area of the globe.
I couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks for your explanation of why it is so important for us to screen. I wish more gentlemen would understand it just as you do. It not only keeps us safe but the gentlemen that we visit with as well. Imagine if we didn't properly screen. There would be a lot of men and ladies getting busted.

Hugs,
Juliette

As a newbie myself and in that lurking eccie phase, this post was helpful. I think researching around always helps but how turtlebrah described the feeling of not knowing and being cautious is #1. i think it'll be a bit before i actually take the next step, but i guess starting by being apart of the community seems to help. good luck to you turtlebrah! we are on the same path!
