Rashes, bumps, crusties, or any other weird skin condition

I am not going to say anyone's name, nor am I going to out any guy. But I will place this in co-ed for those gentleman who don't understand the dangers to a massage therapist or any lady, concerning skin conditions including contagious ones.

I had two clients come to me this week, who had serious looking groin rashes, and horrible looking skin conditions. They were very disappointed when I turned them away and had to drive a long drive back home.

Guys, use some common sense here. If you have a skin condition or something that looks like it could be contagious then you need to go to a doctor and get that cleared up. Don't expect a lady to go through with a session or hope that she won't notice. We are not doctors so we cannot determine if something is or is not contagious. I certainly don't want to take any chances with my health and I know the other ladies do not either. If you tell me "oh its just Jock itch", then what you need to know is that is a contagious fungal infection.. yes it is transmittable.

You will be sent on your way and asked not to come back if you come to me with any such conditions.

Zed neither of those conditions are contagious... but as I said I am not a doctor nor are any of the other ladies. There is no way to tell what is a contagious condition and what is not. I have had schooling training on contraindications and as far as massage goes there are some conditions that require the use of gloves and or avoidance of the area altogether. I really don't want to try and play doctor and make a medical decision (which I cannot and will not do) concerning someones skin conditions. So if you have these issues and you come to me I will most likely give you your money back and turn you away. Nothing personal I just can't afford to get sick or contract anything from anyone.

By the way there are very good treatments and prescriptions for both Plaque Psoriasis and eczema and all you have to do is visit a doctor get on some prescriptions to clear up those conditions. Why on earth would you not get treated? That makes no sense.

I know they're not contagious, it's an immune system disorder. Since you're not a doctor, you'd turn someone away because they have eczema? They can look like rashes. Also, some people don't respond well to treatment, especially if they're more than mild.

There are a ton of "skin conditions" that are perfectly common and not contagious at all. I respect your decision (it's your rodeo) but this seems short sighted to me. Maybe educate yourself a bit so you're not wasting some guy's time because he has frigging eczema or cystic acne or something. These can show up in the buttocks or groin area and are no more contagious than a freckle.

Linux I am trained, I have a license. There is a big difference between acne, black heads etc.. and a huge rash, or skin condition that could indicate a serious infection. I do know what to look for. I am not going to take someones word if they have something that looks like this:

As being safe and ok. There is ringworm and athletes foot, herpes and all other types that can look a lot like Psoriasis and eczema. There is no way for me to tell if these are non contagious.

Again, this isn't mean to personally attack anyone but to inform anyone who has such conditions that if you come to me, A) I may put on gloves and you are not getting anymore than a standard massage. Or B) I am giving you your money back and sending you home.

This is for my protection. The two people who came to me recently had very serious skin issues far beyond a simple case of acne.

Now if you have an outbreak like this, I am going to send you home. This is treatable. Lots of good medications out there to treat this and get it under control.

There are all sorts of skin conditions that a massage therapist has to be careful of and or avoid. Such as Cellulitis, Decubitus ulcers, Scleroderma, Ring Worm, Athletes foot, Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris), Benign skin tumors and so on, most licensed massage therapists will require a medical letter from your doctor stating that it is not contagious or that it is ok to massage the areas, or surrounding areas. I know all of these skin conditions can be embarrassing to the person experiencing it, but I am not going to put my health at jeopardy if I come across such conditions.

The point of this thread is to make those that frequent this board aware of my stance on this. I don't want a client to drive all the way out to see me only to find out I will not work on them because they have said conditions. If you have any medical condition please be sure to make me aware of it prior to visiting me.

I am sorry if this grosses any of you out, but I have encountered people with these conditions over the years as a massage therapist.

Folliculitis is a bacterial infection of the hair follicles that has spread and is contagious. It can mimic herpes and the other types of skin conditions described. No massage therapist will work on a client who has anything like this.
